Just four years after its opening, Bonnie has outgrown its original building and expanded its warm, distinctive Goudvisch Family design into the neighboring structure. With two new passages connecting the basement and ground floor of the main bar to the new extension, Bonnie opens its arms to more guests. By enlarging its capacity for gatherings and celebration, both locals and newcomers will have the chance to enjoy this new homey space.
Studio Modijefsky has embraced Bonnie's historical design language to create an evolved concept for its extension. This new design blends classic elements, such as mirrors, traditional tiles, and Bonnie's characteristic colors, into a refreshed material palette. Familiar materials like burgundy marble, classic tiles, and oak wood are integrated to create harmony between the spaces. Notably, materials are applied in innovative ways: the green of the original Bonnie's tiled floor now appears on the walls and benches, while the yellow tiles are combined with burgundy ceiling colors in the fabric for the acoustic ceiling panels, among other creative applications.
Seamless Spatial Synergy
The extension of Bonnie is accessible through passages located next to the main bar and on the basement level. A wooden staircase with tiled accents and a brownish steel railing serves as the primary connection to the adjacent space. The existing design language—featuring tiles, wooden profiles, linear paneling, and mirror stripes on the walls—flows seamlessly throughout the entire room. Lines merge from one space to the next, creating a visually cohesive and beautiful blend between the two areas.
Kitchen Kinetics
The kitchen in Bonnie's extension has been relocated to the opposite side from its original position, allowing the former kitchen space to be transformed into a larger seating area in the basement. This change has created a cozy and vibrant café-restaurant atmosphere. The two-sided open kitchen now sits directly opposite the new staircase, enhancing the connection between both areas and offering flexible functionality throughout the week. The bespoke tiled floor from the original Bonnie has been replaced with alternative wooden flooring featuring perpendicular grain directions in the extended area. This design choice highlights colors and patterns as the main features, giving the new space its unique identity.
Stunning Service Stations
The extension of Bonnie features two elegant service bars—one dedicated to wines and the other to drinks—creating a sophisticated addition to the main bar. These two volumes, with their bespoke curved edges, are designed to mirror the grand statement bar on the opposite side. The recognizable purple and red marble backs, along with refined mirror strokes and intricate patterns, add a touch of luxury. The small bar areas are separated from the dining space by a stylish railing that echoes the patterns found on the wooden bar cabinet fronts, seamlessly blending functionality with a touch of poetic design.
Comfortable Corners
The extension of Bonnie features a spacious L-shaped bench along the back wall, complemented by traditional tabletops, chairs, and barstools to maximize the space, creating an ideal setting for dinners and aperitivos. This arrangement mirrors the old Bonnie's style, with a composition of wooden panels alternated with mirrors and accented by a distinctive light fixture. The bench and panels work harmoniously to enhance the space. A high corner table by the window offers the perfect spot for a drink with a view of the neighborhood. Additionally, the ceiling boasts acoustic panels and playful lighting fixtures placed between wooden beams, walls, and panels, contributing to a comfortable and cozy ambiance.
Facade Flair
Outside on the façade, the new striped awnings maintain the shades of black, grey, white, and purple of the original Bonnie. Now the areas visually blend into one whole, embracing the corner through its length.
Studio Modijefsky has embraced its previously developed concept and added it into the extended space while creating its own characteristic identity. Having a graphic layer in the design blends with the warm traditional bar vibes.
